Traveling to NZ, and back

There we have it - our Spring Break (and some!) has come to an end. We just flew in this morning, and bags are all unpacked, the washing machine is in full swing and the cleaning has begun. The whole house was covered in sand/dust... yuk.

But let's take it from the beginning!
Here are two very excited kids about to head off to see Grandma and Granddad for the first time in a very long time, and to get back to NZ for the first time in 2 1/2 years.

On the way out we had to do a stop-over in Sydney. We got in really late, so we were happy to find not just a McDonalds next to the hotel, for a quick evening snack; but also a donut place, with a donut manufacturing conveyor belt! Watching the donuts being made kept the kids amused for quite a while!

Nathan had booked us a hotel close to the airport. Since we were just going to spend about 10 hours there, it was cheap and cheerful. Or, scrap that - just cheap... It felt a bit like a prison cell with that iron bunk bed and itchy brown blankets! Ah well, after a bit of TV we all managed some sleep anyway, so we were rested for the last bit of the trip over the Tasman the next day.

At Sydney airport!

Before we knew it, it was time to depart again - and at Auckland airport we found another kind of decoration, "borrowed from Middle-Earth":

On the way back we went all the way through in one go, 28 hours door to door... We left Taupo at lunch time on Thursday and came home 8 am Friday morning (4 pm NZ time). A long trip!
Here we were waiting to board that 13h25min flight from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi:

I don't know if these kind of ceiling lights are all over the airplane, but where we were seated, this is how it looks when they dim the light during their night flights, like a starry sky! I like it!

So, we got back in early this morning, and I hope that the jet lag wont be too bad, as we managed to sleep really well on the plane. It usually is a lot easier traveling this way; plus the kids don't have school until Sunday, so we should be good for the early start by then. Back to business!
