Craters of the Moon

We managed to do a couple of new things this visit that we have never done with the kids before, for example a visit to the Craters of the Moon. Nathan and I went there back in 2001, on my first trip to NZ. We haven't been since even though it is situated very close to where we are, so we thought it was time to take the children.

The Craters of the Moon is a geothermal area, which is monitored regularly by scientists. The last big eruption here was in 2002.

It's not very big, the loop took us about 45 minutes to complete. We got to see big craters and a lot of boiling mud along the way. Even on this sunny day, there was a lot of steam being discharged from the larger craters.

There is a walkway in place so that you don't stray off onto the soft, hot ground by mistake. It's so hot you could burn your feet and legs if you take a wrong step!
